Once upon a time…
All great fairytales include an impressive castle with breathing taking architecture. Most are located in the midst of an epic dark forest, or on a mountain, along a crystal clean river running through nearby. Unfortunately, most castles that were built were not built for beauty, but instead for protection. Therefore as a result, most castles are a huge brute architectural statements. It takes a rare few to break the mold and seek something different. Ludwig II of Bavaria did such a thing, as homage to Richard Wagner. Today it stands as one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations.
“It is my intention to rebuild the old castle ruin at Hohenschwangau near the Pollat Gorge in the authentic style of the old German knights’ castles…the location is the most beautiful one could find, holy and unapproachable, a worthy temple for the divine friend who has brought salvation and true blessing to the world.”
